Imagine a property manager in Burlington asking ChatGPT which local company can inspect the fire protection equipment in their building. Or a homeowner in Milton asking Google’s AI search features to compare furnace repair options.

Before contacting anyone, that customer may already be using an AI-generated answer to narrow their choices.

For your business, the opportunity is to make accurate, useful information available when those questions are asked. That starts with clear business details, helpful website content, and credible evidence of your work.

Google confirms that established SEO practices remain relevant to its AI search features. These three priorities build on those proven foundations. They improve the information available about your business, although no method can guarantee an AI recommendation.

### 1 Make your business easy to find and understand

Start with a simple question: could someone who has never heard of your business quickly understand what you do, where you work, and how to contact you?

Your website and business listings should answer that clearly. Use your genuine business name, maintain accurate contact information, and describe the services you actually provide. Keep your hours and service areas current wherever you manage a listing.

For local businesses, your Google Business Profile deserves particular attention. Google says complete, accurate information helps businesses appear in relevant local results. Choose appropriate categories, explain your services, and add genuine photos that help customers recognize your team or understand your work.

Be specific on your website, too. A fire protection company that lists fire alarm inspections, sprinkler testing, and extinguisher maintenance gives customers more useful information than a page that simply promises “complete solutions.” Clearly explain which services are available in each area you cover.

Your information also needs to be technically accessible. Ask your website provider to check whether important pages can be crawled and indexed, whether navigation links work, and whether essential service details appear as readable text.

For ChatGPT search, OpenAI advises allowing its search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, to access your content. This is separate from allowing its crawler for model training. Your website provider can review those settings without you needing to become a technical expert.

Treat this as routine maintenance. When you add a service, change your phone number, or expand into another city, update the relevant pages and profiles. Customers should not have to work out which version of your information is correct.

### 2 Publish helpful answers to real customer questions

Think about the questions customers ask before they feel comfortable hiring you. Those conversations are a useful starting point for your website content.

A homeowner might want to know what affects the cost of replacing a furnace. A property manager might ask what happens during a fire protection inspection. A salon client might want help choosing between two treatments.

Create pages that answer those questions in plain language. Explain what the service includes, who it is suitable for, what affects pricing, and what someone should expect next. Where an answer depends on the situation, explain those differences.

Google’s content guidance emphasizes useful information, original insight, and demonstrated experience. That gives you a practical reason to bring your team’s knowledge into your website. A technician’s explanation of a common problem can provide detail that a generic article misses.

For example, an HVAC company could explain how it assesses an unevenly heated home, which questions it asks, and when an inspection is needed before recommending equipment. With permission, photos and a short account of a completed job can make the explanation more useful.

Use descriptive headings and answer the main question early. Add supporting detail where it helps someone make a decision. Link related pages so visitors can move naturally from learning about a problem to understanding the service you offer.

AI tools can help organize a draft, but someone who knows the service should check every claim. Publish information you can stand behind and update it when your processes or offerings change.

A manageable place to begin is your five most common customer questions. Answer them thoroughly, then build further content around the questions your team continues to hear.

### 3 Build credibility through honest reviews and trusted sources

When someone discovers your business, they need reasons to feel comfortable choosing it. Your own website explains what you offer; customer feedback and credible third-party information help people evaluate those claims.

Google identifies prominence as a factor in local rankings and says links from other websites, review volume, and positive ratings can contribute. That supports investing in a genuine reputation. It does not establish a universal formula for appearing in every AI platform.

Build a consistent process for inviting customers to leave honest reviews after a completed service. Make the link easy to use and welcome feedback from customers with different experiences. Google prohibits incentives for reviews, so avoid offering discounts or gifts in exchange.

Reply thoughtfully. Thank customers for specific feedback, acknowledge concerns, and move private details into a direct conversation. Your response helps future readers understand how you treat people.

Look beyond reviews as well. Keep legitimate trade association profiles current, explain relevant qualifications, and pursue opportunities to contribute useful expertise to local or industry publications. Focus on sources that matter to your customers.

Our recommendation is to treat this as a credibility strategy. Accurate information on relevant, reputable websites gives people additional ways to verify your business and creates sources that search tools may encounter. A mention alone cannot promise an AI recommendation.

Automation can support the routine work, including review requests and reminders to follow up. Keep a person responsible for checking accuracy and handling sensitive feedback.

### Turn stronger visibility into customer opportunities

Begin with one improvement in each area: correct your business information, strengthen a useful service page, and establish a reliable review process.

Then track meaningful results. Review website visits, qualified leads, and booked work. Ask new customers how they found you, and keep your contact and booking process straightforward.
